Five (tried and tested) things preventing you from scaling to $10K months

Business

1 | Charging for fixed projects without properly vetting hours required

2 | Charging by the hour instead of day rates

3 | Setting energetic boundaries and sticking to them (yes, that means saying NO to things)

Your energy is your currency.

When you are saying yes to things that don’t light you up, or feel energetically valuable, you will begin to experience energy leaks in your finances and your emotional energy.

The things that you don’t feel excited about, or feel subconsciously undervalued or you’re undercharging for, will take twice as long to complete, through mindless procrastination, resentment or as a way to unconsciously cognitively align yourself with the loss of value you feel.

This phenomenon is similar to a sunken cost bias. For example, if you take on a client or a project and discount the price below what you feel comfortable with, you may find yourself spending additional time on it to ‘make up value’ in time to cover costs lost or prove to yourself the work you’re doing is valuable.

Yes — this sounds counterintuitive (wouldn’t I spend less time on something I feel I’m undercharging for?). However, no — it all comes down to the spiritual protection of the ego.

What is a rate that feels exciting and worthwhile to you? What projects do you find yourself losing yourself in endless hours of flow and creativity, and which ones feel stagnant, stale and exhausting?

4| Not having a north star or vision

5| Thinking / strategising / planning too much and not actually doing anything

Did you know She Glows Creative took three years to actually come into fruition?

THREE. YEARS.

In that time, I had a collection of notebooks, journals, scraps of paper and half finished Excel spreadsheets with a dream and a plan.

Then, I would overcomplicate it, add in a range of unnecessary steps and anything that would actually overwhelm and prevent me from taking any meaningful action.

Overplanning and avoiding ‘doing the thing’ often stems from fear. What are you fearful of, and what are the limiting beliefs that are getting in the way of you taking action?

This is a simple exercise you can complete in less than 10 minutes. Write down the following:

“I am not [insert the action here] because I am scared of…”

Write without censoring yourself for 5 minutes. Keep on writing. If you keep drawing blanks, write that down (“I am scared of… I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know”).

Trust me. Something will eventually spring to mind. It might just be a protection mechanism preventing you from ACTUALLY revealing and — in effect — facing your fears.

Our brains will often protect us from something we’re not willing to face. Listen to the whisper and approach it with gentle curiosity.

From there, ask yourself — “What is the next step?”

You don’t need to see the ‘whole staircase’ in front of you, just the first-next step

Take the first-next step and repeat the process. It might be picking up the phone to call someone, contacting your dream client that you’ve been too scared to approach, or doing the thing that you've been putting off for too long.

6| Giving up too quickly and not giving something enough time and consistency to grow

It took me six years, two business failures and a heck of a lot of poor first attempts and mistakes to realise things simply take time.

Over this time, I endured a range of uncomfortable nuances — addressing client feedback, providing refunds, crappy designs that I shudder just thinking about now — and having periods of utter despair and depression before starting to make some serious traction with my business.

My message to you is this — keep going

Business success comes in ebbs and flows. You will have good months, growing months and *nothing-but-crickets* kinda months.

They are all NORMAL, and it’s just a matter of riding the wave that is entrepreneurship.

Find one small action you can commit to every day for the next 30 days that you can see would move the needle forward.

From there, start with a three step plan and KEEP IT SIMPLE. No more steps. No complex frameworks, just the first three steps or actions you need to take to start your business. Rinse and repeat.
